Ways to Get Rid of a Cough

Cough is the first reaction of the body when any foreign particle enters the respiratory tract and causes irritation. It can be of varying types depending on its cause. It can be dry, mucus producing or even of hacking type that occurs when one suffers from whooping cough.

Cough is the primary, yet, the most significant symptom of common cold, strep throat and influenza (flu); and of other respiratory diseases like bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and other disorders of the lungs. Allergy of any kind (mostly aerobic allergies) and smoking also lead to constant coughing. Sometimes, causes of cough like common cold, flu, etc., are contagious. Hence, it is essential to treat cough as soon as possible. It is recommended to consult the doctor immediately in case severe cough, accompanied with other symptoms like throat infection, runny nose, fever, nausea, etc., is observed.

Natural Remedies
You can treat cough with products that are easily available at home. Remedies mentioned below are age-old methods that are applicable even today. It is wise to consult the doctor before going for any home remedies, in case you suffer from any chronic condition.

  • Having hot drinks like ginger tea or chicken soup, is one of the best remedy for treating cough. Ginger tea is made like regular tea (with milk). You simply need to add 1-2 pieces of chopped ginger while boiling tea and strain them out later. You can have ginger tea once or twice a day. On the other hand, chicken soup is effective because the pepper content in it helps in thinning the mucus. Secondly, chicken soup also acts as an anti-inflammatory drink and helps get rid of cough.
  • Lemon and honey are natural products having anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties. Honey, specifically, is known as a natural cough suppressant. It is also one of the major ingredients of cough syrups. You can add 1 teaspoon honey, 1 teaspoon lemon in a glass of lukewarm water and have it once or twice a day. Honey is not to be administered to babies without consulting the doctor.
  • Uses of turmeric are extensively found in Ayurveda and Chinese medicine. Turmeric contains antiseptic properties that help in getting rid of dry cough. You can add ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder to a glass of hot or lukewarm milk and have it once a day. This mixture is helpful in treating cough and also prevent it from recurring.
  • Gargling with salt water is also an age-old, but, effective method of treating cough and sore throat. You should add ½ teaspoon of salt to lukewarm water and gargle 2-3 times a day. Gargling helps to treat mucus-producing cough, dry and scratchy throat, and cough that arises out of it.
  • Red onion mixed with honey also helps in getting rid of cough easily. You should finely chop 1 onion and add 1 tablespoon of honey to it. Leave the mixture overnight in an air-tight jar. Next morning, have 1-2 teaspoon of juice that is formed in the jar.

Taking medicines is still considered as the fastest way of getting rid of chronic cough. There are several cough drops (lozenges) and syrups available in the market. You may also get cough syrups and sprays that are equally effective. However, these sprays should not be used in case of infants and babies. Most of these products can be obtained over the counter. It is advisable not to have strong medication or antibiotics to treat minor cases of cold. It is strongly recommended to use medication only on consulting the doctor.

When suffering from cough, one should drink a lot of fluids (water) as it helps in loosening mucus and clearing the congestion in the body. Also, taking complete rest is the best method of treating cough. Lastly, note that it is recommended to consult the doctor before using any medication, sprays or home remedies.

Ways to Stop a Cough with Honey

Cough is the natural bodily mechanism of expelling foreign materials and mucus from the respiratory tract. However, the condition can be really annoying, especially for young kids. Most of the conventional cough medications try to suppress cough, which is not advisable. This is one of the reasons why some people resort to home remedies. Apart from relieving cough, these remedies are also said to help the body to expel phlegm. Honey is one of the widely used home remedies for cough. It is used as such or in combination with other things, like ginger.

Natural Ways to Stop a Cough with Honey

Though, there is no conclusive scientific evidence to prove the effectiveness of honey in combating cough, it has been used for this purpose, throughout the centuries. Various studies have been conducted in this regard and their results too point towards this direction. Honey is also claimed to be better than some of the commonly used cough syrups.

The working mechanism of honey against cough is still not clear. The smooth and syrupy consistency of honey is said to work wonders in soothing the irritated membranes of the throat. Apart from that, it is believed to have antibacterial properties, which counter the bacteria causing cough. Another contention is that honey has powerful antioxidants that fight free radicals that may be involved in causing cough. According to Ayurveda, honey is effective in eliminating phlegm from the lungs, thereby relieving cough and other related symptoms.

  • A tablespoon full of raw honey before bedtime is found to induce sleep and to relieve cough as well. A study involving small kids (above the age of two) showed that a teaspoon of honey administered before bedtime is more effective in relieving cough, than some of the commonly used cough syrups. You may also mix a teaspoon of honey to a glass of lukewarm milk and consume it before bedtime.
  • A combination of honey and ginger has always been popular as a cough remedy. All you have to do is to mix a tablespoon each of honey and ginger juice and consume it before bedtime (or every 2 to 3 hours, as per the severity of the cough). This remedy is also good for eliminating excess phlegm in the respiratory tract. Some people like to warm the mixture lightly, before consumption.
  • You may also take honey and lemon juice for cough. In order to prepare this special honey-lemon cough remedy, you have to boil a whole lemon for a few minutes. Once the lemon gets cool, squeeze it and mix its juice with a cup of honey. You may take one to two tablespoons of this mixture at an interval of four hours. This honey-lemon mixture is found to be more effective in those with cough linked to severe throat irritation.
  • In some regions, a special homemade cough syrup is prepared with honey. In order to make this cough syrup, you need ¼ teaspoon each of cayenne pepper and ground ginger, along with a tablespoon each of honey and apple cider vinegar. Mix these ingredients with two tablespoons of water. You can use one or two teaspoons of this mixture, at an interval of five to six hours.
  • You may also use honey mixed with onion juice, for reliving cough and for getting rid of phlegm. Mix a teaspoon each of onion juice and honey and ingest one teaspoon twice a day. Another method is to boil a tablespoon of honey with a cup of water, a tablespoon of oregano and a couple of crushed garlic cloves. Let the mixture boil for ten minutes, before removing from heat. Drink the mixture slowly, when it is lukewarm.

Though there is no conclusive evidence to prove its effectiveness, honey is highly popular as a remedy for cough. However, honey should not be administered to kids below the age of one, as there is a risk of botulism. Even those who are allergic to honey, must avoid using it as a cough remedy. If you find no relief from cough and related symptoms, even after taking honey for a week, then it is always advisable to consult your doctor.

Ways to Treat Asthma During Pregnancy

Asthma is a chronic disorder of the respiratory system where periodic inflammation occurs in the air passage and normal airflow into the body gets affected. It is triggered due to irritation of the lining of the air passage caused by allergens, irritants, infections, cold weather conditions, hormonal changes and so on. An asthma attack is identified with symptoms like breathing difficulty, wheezing, chest tightness, cough, etc. Asthma attacks during pregnancy is fairly common. Those women who have a medical history of asthma tend to get the attacks more frequently during pregnancy. On the other hand, some women develop asthma during pregnancy.

How to Treat Asthma During Pregnancy?
Many women try to avoid asthma treatment during pregnancy as they feel that medicines can cause harm to their unborn baby. It is true that taking asthma medicines may not be good for the baby but an uncontrolled asthma attack during pregnancy is even worse. It decreases the amount of oxygen supply to the mother and the fetus. This can lead to serious complications like high blood pressure in the pregnant mother, pre-eclampsia, low birth weight of the infant, premature baby birth, etc.

For treatment during pregnancy, you have to involve both your pulmonologist and the obstetrician. Do not stop taking medicines on your own when you come to know about your pregnancy. Rather, you must inform your obstetrician about the medicines that you are taking. When you inform your pulmonologist that you are pregnant, then he or she may change the dosage of the medicine or give you new medicines.

The most popular medicine used for treating asthma during pregnancy is steroid inhalers. It opens up the air passage and alleviates symptoms. It may be accompanied by oral steroid medicines or injections. The dosage of these medicines depends on the frequency of the asthma attack and severity of the symptoms. Do not worry as your doctor will select suitable medicines for you that have minimum side effects on you and your baby.

If asthma is triggered due to exposure to allergens, then doctors prescribe antihistamines for controlling the allergy symptoms. A nasal congestion due to upper respiratory tract infection is often treated with oral decongestants. Those who are prone to flu attack may be advised to take flu shots to prevent aggravation of the problem. Regular intake of medicines is not enough, you also have to visit your pulmonologist to monitor the lung function from time to time. Your obstetrician will also recommend frequent ultrasounds to check fetal growth.

Treating an Asthma Attack at Home
Along with the medicinal treatment, you have to take a few remedial measures at home to control asthma symptoms. A few helpful tips in this regard are as follows:

  • Strictly avoid tobacco smoke exposure. Those pregnant women who are smokers should quit the habit immediately. Smoking can lead to a severe asthma attack.
  • Make sure that your home and office environment where you spend maximum time is free from environmental irritants like dirt, dust, pollen, mold, etc.
  • Do not go outdoors in cold weather conditions. If you have to go, make sure you cover up your mouth and nose properly with a scarf.
  • Mix some rock salt with mustard oil to prepare a thick paste. Massage this paste gently on your chest daily. This reduces the chances of an asthma attack to a great extent.
  • Garlic can provide relief from asthma. Boil 8-10 garlic cloves in a glass of milk for 10 minutes. Let it cool down and then drink it. It should be taken daily for best results.

The main aim of this treatment is to keep the mother and the baby healthy. If you are one of those women who have pre-existing asthma problems, there is no need to assume that you are going to have a tough time during pregnancy. You can manage asthma with proper medical care, regular monitoring of the condition and some suitable precautionary measures. Take care!
